Dr. Plump is a native of Birmingham, Alabama and a 1985 graduate of A.H. Parker High School where he was a (3) year letterman in varsity football, baseball, and a (4) year member of the concert choir. After graduation, John matriculated to Alcorn State University to honor a full music scholarship to study voice with a concentration in classical music and contemporary opera. In 1992, he left Alcorn State with a host of academic credentials. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Science Education and a Master of Science Degree in Secondary Education. In 2014, Dr. Plump received his doctorate in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University.
For the last (30) years, Dr. Plump has labored as a teacher and school administrator in the Birmingham City Schools. Dr. Plump has served as a Social Studies teacher at Hayes Middle School, Chairman of the Social Studies Department at Parker High School and Hayes High School where he taught courses in American History, American Government, and Psychology. His past administrative positions in education have included being an assistant principal, alternative school principal, and principal at many schools within the district. Currently, Dr. Plump serves as the Hearing Officer for Birmingham City Schools where he works untiringly as an advocate for students.
Dr. Plump is the CEO of Plump Educational Consulting Services, Inc. and is the author of (3) books entitled, Tragedy to Triumph: The Urban School Transformation, Pushing for Proficiency: The Teacher’s Instructional Highway, and Motivational Magic for Educators. Dr. Plump holds membership in the Alabama High School Athletic Association, National Alliance of Black School Educators, National Council for Educating Black Children, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., The Birmingham Chapter of The Optimist Club, and Phi Delta Kappa Educational Honors Fraternity. Dr. Plump is a member of Hopewell Baptist Church and is married to the former Sonya Lee Belle. They have produced two lovely daughters, Jhana (26) a graduate of Tennessee State University, and Jalyn (18), a freshman @ Alabama State University. Dr. Plump’s mantra for mankind is simple, “whatever you decide to do in life, do it to the magnitude that no man dead, no man living, and no man yet to be born could ever do it any better.”
